Hunger Pains

Hunger.... is one of the few things that drives a spirit eater such as a phantasm to continue hunting.... Hunger....holding as a warning bell that the barrier supressing the double edged core is fading... and to prevent the flames of their ethereal core from devouring them from the inside out... they are forced to hunt and to feed on the essence of others.... in order to fuel and supress their core... To ignore such hunger... is to bring 'death' upon ones' self.... But instinct runs a powerful course within their veins.... and before the breaking point is reached, the hunger reaches its highest point... to the point of rabid savagery in a desperate attempt to obtain some form of sustinance before the dam breaks and consumes their form in fire....

Considering Danny's firm belief/obsession in protecting others... he often openly refuses to submit to his phantasmal nature... Thus refusing to hunt or consume spirits. Danny found himself struggling frequently with his instincts and his hunger early on, and if denied for too long, would end up finding it getting the better of him, to possibly dangerous levels... This eventually leads to him having to accept the substitutes/imitations in bottled form from Clockwork, or relunctantly hunting radical (non-sentient) spirits. (He did go through a period of openly refusing to take the substitutes once he found out what it was, and that it wasn't some sort of 'medicine'.. )
